My Tree        As I watched this tree throughout the semester it changed only slightly. It was larger tree and because the spring was so late this year it was hard to get enough pictures of the tree actually gaining it leaves. It was a tree right outside of my dorm building. It looked to be a large oak tree at least 6 stories tall, so it was hard to get pictures of the flowers. The only changes that really stood out to me were the buds beginning to form right before I left for the year. Because spring was so late this year all the trees started to bloom late including mine.    When I looked at this tree it really always reminded me of morning which either came with good or bad thoughts depending on the day. I would look at it every morning because I would look outside to determine the weather which as everyone knows was not the best this semester. It was so large and so far away that occasionally it was hard to look at the buds but they seemed...

Sustainable Choices to Protect White's Seahorse and the Red Panda

Image
White's Seahorse The species picked is a seahorse known as Whites Seahorse, New Holland Seahorse, or the Sydney Seahorse. This certain animal is native to the southeast part of Australia in the Pacific Ocean and are a non-migratory animal. Many of these animals are found in shallow parts of the water where light can reach such as estuaries, seagrass, and harbors at about 40 feet down and tend to be very camouflaged in colors ranging from grey, brown, and black ( Mcgrouther ).  They tend to keep their habitats in elaborate corals and structures that can produce a good food source, this includes amphipods and small crustaceans. The predators to the seahorse are an abundance of marine animals since these animals are primary consumers. As for mating for these animals, they mate between October and April. These creatures keep one mate for their entire life.  These animals have been vulnerable and declining since 1996 and continue to decline as pollution and overfishing...

Coral Reef Description and Threats

Image
Elissa Parker Professor Burchsted March 26, 2018 Coral Reef Description and Threats              Coral reefs are something that the world has been slightly following for the last couple of years. They are beautiful parts of the ocean, but they are becoming endangered day by day due to pollution, humans, and so much more. Coral reefs are home to 25% of all marine life which is why scientists are making a big deal of these beautiful homes being endangered. These biomes are found in warm water, near the surface of the ocean to allow the life to grow. With all this life in the reefs, there are abundant amounts of producers and consumers. The main producer in the reefs is Blue- Green Algae. These algae are what produces the food the corals consume, and they live inside the corals, though this alga can become poisonous to the corals if water becomes too warm and this makes coral bleaching occur. Coral bleaching is an epidemic mo...

Environmental and Health Impacts: The Benefits Of Small Farms

Image
Industrialized Farms and Their Effects From a newborn infant to a ninety-nine year old person, we all must have food to nourish us and keep us alive. As the population of us has grown so has the food production all around the world which has now made mega farms. Yet, while reading Everything Under the Sun by Suzuki and Hanington , they claim, “ To begin, close to a billion people are malnourished and many more are finding it difficult to feed their families as food prices increase.” ( Suzuki et. al 179). So with all these farms why are one seventh of those people malnourished or struggling? Added on, these larger farms are adding pesticides to these crops for cheaper even though there are endless studies to show that these chemicals are hurting our bodies. This is overall not helping human life in any way. Not only does this have an effect on humans but it has an effect on the environment which creates more problems for humans.  Many of these farms are using a large amount ...

My Tree Outside My Window

Image
This tree is directly outside the window in my room. I chose this tree because of its placement. I can keep an eye on it everyday by just looking out my window. This tree looks like it is an older oak tree from how the leaves are shaped. The tree is as tall as my dorm building, which is 5 stories high, which also shows me that this tree has probably been here for at least 30 plus years. This tree has a type of moss on it that I have seen on many other trees around me. It also looks that over the years some of the branches have been cut down for reasons that I do not know. At the moment, my tree looks very bare because of the season but during the fall the leaves will turn a burnt orange and after winter they will be a bright green. I work at a nature camp in the summer so I am surrounded by these trees and, being from New Hampshire, I see these trees change each year so trees in general represent growth in my eyes. As the seasons change so do us and as we grow up, many times at our chi...
